The Difference between a Pediatric Dentist & General Dentist

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dentists, like Dr. Wilkerson, are specialists in treating the unique needs of children. A pediatric dentist is required to complete two-three additional years of specialty training beyond dental school. They also limit their dental practice to treating the oral health needs of infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs.

Choosing a pediatric practice to trust with the health and beauty of your child’s smile is an important decision. Making a positive first impression at the dentist can influence children’s view of dentistry for the rest of their lives, so it’s important to make sure your child is comfortable with the doctor and staff.

Ideally, your child’s dental experience will be something to remember for the rest of their life. Make sure it will give them something to smile about.

Special Training
Pediatric dentists receive postdoctoral training in child psychology, behavior modification, and pharmacology. Pediatric dentists also undergo yearly training and re-certification to stay current with the most recent developments in technology and patient care.

Education for Parent and Child
Pediatric dentists explain preventive care, hygiene, and treatments in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

How to Choose a Pediatric Dentist

A Lifetime of Oral Health Starts Early
Pediatric dentists are specialists in treating the unique needs of children. A pediatric dentist has completed two to three years of specialty training beyond dental school. He or she limits the practice to treating the oral health needs of infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs.

Choosing a pediatric practice to trust with the health and beauty of your child’s smile is an important decision. Making a positive first impression at the dentist can influence children’s view of dentistry for the rest of their lives, so it’s important to make sure your child is comfortable with the doctor and staff.

Ideally, your child’s dental experience will be something to remember for the rest of his or her life. Make sure it will give your child something to smile about.

Selecting a pediatric dentist may seem like a daunting task, so it’s a great idea to ask for a recommendation from someone you trust. Whether it’s a friend, co-worker, or family member, they’ll probably be more than happy to share their child’s dental experience.

Consider education and experience
Once you have a list of a few pediatric dentists, do a little research. Find out about their educational background, where they went to school, and what kinds of continuing education or specialty training they’ve had. Before you set up an appointment, make sure the candidate is a licensed member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. This ensures that he or she remains up to date on the newest and most effective clinical procedures.

Make sure your child is comfortable
It’s very important for your child to feel comfortable with the pediatric dentist. Does the doctor have a pleasant chairside manner? Do you feel like he or she really pays attention to your concerns? Is the staff friendly and helpful? Does the office have a fun atmosphere that your child enjoys? Take all this into consideration when choosing a pediatric dental office.

Ask questions
During your initial consultation, don’t be afraid to ask questions. After all, that’s why you’re there! It’s important for you to understand every aspect of your child’s dental health and the available treatment options. The more informed you are about your child’s dental health, the better decisions you will be able to make.

A few additional things to consider:

  • Is the office located near your home or work to make appointments as convenient as possible?
  • Do they offer extended office hours before or after work and school?
  • What types of insurance does the office work with and what kind of financing do they offer?
  • Do the dentist and staff seem interested in making your child’s experience personalized, or do you feel like “just a number?”
  • Give your child the gift of ideal dental health by visiting a pediatric dentist who truly cares about your child’s health and happiness.

Super friendly staff. Our daughter is 11 months old and had her first cleaning. They were very informative and did their best to make all of us comfortable. Glad we picked them to care for our daughter’s teeth.

Kayla

Thank you to the staff, Hygienist Lacey, and Dr. Wilkerson. My three year old needed a thorough dental assessment and she loved it. The Kid’s Place gave me great care, peace of mind, and reassurance in my daughters dental care. Thank you!

Scheduling was simple, efficient and straightforward. We were seen quickly after calling for an appointment. The office staff sent portal information via email as promised. The facility is immaculate and welcoming. My son was happy to be there from the moment we walked through the door. The staff was friendly, personable and organized. The doctor was compassionate, informative and thorough. Appointment was on schedule, so no unnecessary toddler squirminess! I was not rushed and all of my questions were answered.

I’m so glad we found Dr. Wilkerson. He and his staff have been great! It says a lot when your 4-year old goes in to get two caps and is excitedly asking if he can go back to the dentist tomorrow!

Jodi

Best dentist and staff around! My son enjoys going to the dentist now! Cute space all dolled up and children themed! We absolutely love it!!

Wendy

The Kid’s Place was awesome! They helped me out and they were super super nice. The environment was very calming and I felt very welcome to be there in the safe environment.

Jake

Thoughtful, thorough, and professional dental practice. My daughter never complains about going to the dentist… she loves it! The staff is wonderful, accommodating, and compassionate to children. The little touches like the movies and toys are great for the kids; the top quality care for their teeth is, of course, the best part. I also appreciate the follow-up calls that always come after the visits to make sure everything went ok and to see if we have more questions — because sometimes you forget to ask the questions while you’re there! Great place, I have recommended it to everyone I know!

I highly recommend this pediatric dentist! My son (age 6), needed a dental procedure that another dentist was unable to get done because he was so nervous and scared. We were then sent here and my son was able to get the procedure done safely and comfortably! Dr. Wilkerson really knows how to approach children and make them feel comfortable. I then decided to bring my daughter (age 3) to her first dental checkup here. It went so smoothly! She was so excited and loved it (especially her goodie bag). I was able to express my concerns and he listened and took the time to explain. If this place would’ve opened sooner I would’ve brought all my kids here! I actually probably will, even though we are moving soon! That’s how good he is!

Valerie

Super fun for kids! My daughter loved it so much, she didn’t want to leave. DR WILKERSON is amazing. He takes the time to explain things and also cares for the kiddos. Truly a different kind of dentist that is needed for the kids!

Diego

The Kid’s Place has thought of everything to make dentist visits fun. They have great waiting room toys, TVs on the ceiling during your check up, and quality tooth care goodie bags. But really, it’s Dr. Wilkerson and his staff who make going to the dentist a stress free experience. Everyone is incredibly warm and friendly. Dr. Wilkerson answers my questions thoroughly and explains everything before he does it. Most importantly, he has a great rapport with my kids. We’ve been here a few times already and I just couldn’t be happier with our experience.
